I have been working with Michael for about 6 months. I had been suffering from bloating, mood swings, irritability and was carrying an extra 10 pounds I couldn’t shed. Since that time Michael has helped me make lifestyle changes including diet and supplementation, working to reduce my sugar cravings and processed food intake. As a result I have lost over 10 lbs, my skin has cleared up and my mood and overall health have markedly improved. At one point, early on, my mood swings were getting worse and I wanted to start back on an anti-anxiety medication. Michael worked with me and within a week or so I realized I did not need the drug anymore. The reason for this testimonial is to show that you can make positive and at times significant changes to your health, often within a relatively short period using nothing more lifestyle changes based upon some health detective work and functional labs. Lets take a look at what steps Ale took to regain her health and function.

I met Ale at the Phoenixville Farmer’s Market, she talked to me over a couple Saturdays, listening to my approach and asking intelligent questions relating specifically to her health and situation.

Based upon a consultation and comprehensive health history, these were Ale’s primary health complaints. There is nothing unusual with these concerns, they are rather common and widespread. The issue is that Ale has been dealing with them for a significant period with no long-term relief found. No one was able to explain to her what was going on and why. At one point the anxiety was severe enough to cause her to take anti-anxiety medication. While it did help, Ale was not enthusiastic about the side-effects that inevitably accompanied the drug.

The basic template for coaching a client to health is the DRESS for Health Success® Lifestyle Grounding Program where we focus on:
- Stress Management
- Supplementation and Hormones (as needed)
Ale’s diet while consisting of mostly whole foods, much of it purchased at the market, was not the most appropriate one for her metabolism. Through Metabolic Typing® we discovered that she was a Slow Oxidizer which means that her metabolism is driven by energy production and carbohydrates need to play a significant role in her particular diet (Personally, as a Fast Oxidizer my metabolism requires significant amounts of quality fats. We have two people with uniquely different nutritional requirements [biochemical individuality]. If we ate each others diet, we would both be miserable). While this was similar to what she was eating, we fine-tuned the diet, focusing more on non-starchy vegetables. We reduced grains, certain fruits and starchy veggies. Almost more important was increasing healthy fat consumption to balance everything out. The result was a significant decrease in sugar cravings making it much easier to focus and remain compliant. After Ale got her diet in order and was feeling better we layered in supplements. Without going into great detail, based upon the results of the functional lab work we discovered that she had stage 3 adrenal fatigue with commonly associated hormone imbalances, digestive dysfunction, elevated levels of oxidative stress and a congested liver. The supplements were suggested to specifically address these healing opportunities by supplying additional levels of nutritional support above and beyond what she was getting from the diet alone.

Within a few months Ale lost weight, specifically fat without increasing her activity levels. In fact, I encouraged her to decrease the intensity so she did not overwhelm the adrenals. Exercising beyond her body’s ability to recover is a very strong and dangerous stressor. Her skin cleared up without applying anything special to it, the body essentially took care of it itself. This is the amazing part. When you give the body what is requires or is lacking, it take that nutrition and energy and applies it where it see fit. The changes in Ale is an example of the body healing itself because it can and it really wants to. Ale mentions that her mood improved. That is an understatement. She also mentioned that for a period she felt so worse she was strongly considering going back on the anti-anxiety drug. Since I have approval to say this, Ale actually broke down crying because of how she felt. It wasn’t so much the anxiety itself, as much as she did not want to take the drug again, but did not know what to do. I sat down with he, listened and talked her through this and explained that when the body is healing sometimes symptoms get worse or flare up for a short time. This is a common occurrence in a healing crisis as the dysfunction resists change but inevitably crumbles. Ale agreed to push forward and with the extra support of her husband she was able to get through this crisis without pharmaceutical intervention. I was and still am very impressed with and proud of the character that Ale showed to get through this stage in her healing.

Ale recognized that not just food but her lifestyle was at the root of her health complaints. Her lifestyle was out of balance, the health problems were her body’s way to communicate to her that it was not happy. The functional lab work showed the internal dysfunction which correlated greatly with her history and complaints. We took advantage of available healing opportunities that would work within Ale’s lifestyle. Everything she did, was not just because I told her to, but because she understood why it would help and how it would help. The most wonderful and inspirational part of this story is that Ale has not just become healthier and more functional, but that she did so by taking control of the situation, took control of her own health destiny.

I want to end this by mentioning that Ale’s results are very common among those individuals that have the confidence in self to make changes and the right motivation or inspiration to keep them focused on the end goal. Plus, Ale was not shy, she always asked questions when they appeared and was willing to openly talk about how she felt and what was going on in her life.
